Audio used in the e-learning environment would be effective when it is used to enhance the lesson. Students today are more in tune to audio and video enhancements. When audio is used properly, students are more engaged in the lesson and also are more often responsive to the lesson. With the introduction of audio books and with many companies introducing units that can download complete books, students will have more opportunities to listen to lessons or books that go with lessons. In the e-learning environment, students will be able to take their book or study guide with them anywhere with these new technological introductions.

How Audio Enhances E-Learning
Having an audio narration allows me to focus in depth on the visuals, specifically when it is a complex visual. Having to read and then figure out what is happening on the page can be very challenging and time consuming.

Audio that accompanies the narration is very helpful. It allows the learner to focus on the visuals. Sometimes there is too much information in a visual and an audio that explains can be very helpful.

Some of the technologies for audio in e-learning include audio narration which explains the on screen graphics or animation. Voice modulation , Captivate 5 ( which is the newest version) are also technologies for audio in e-learning. Captivate can be used for screencasts, or podcast. It stated out as a purely screen recording instrument but have since become a tool that helps the e-learner authoring tool. An additional technology for audio in e-learning is the speech over which is very useful for update maintenance. It synchronizes voice, subtitles and screen objects. Audio voice-over and audio -microphone are technologies for audio in e-learning.

Audio is appropriately used when it blends with the information being discussed. Audio can be used if it enhances the information, such as the author reading it aloud. Audio is also well used if the information being read is joined by an explanation of the information being read and helps the reader get a better grasp on the detail and depth of the text.

I appreciate being able to just focus on the graphics when there are many of them or they are showing a detailed concept. It is so helpful to have narrated descriptions.

Absolutely; I feel the same way. There are times when I really struggle to do the reading, and if there are visuals, then I get overloaded trying to look at everything.

Listening to an audio narration of a graphic takes away from the distraction of having to read as well as watch a video or presentation. One person can just sit and listen and take notes depending on what's being taught.

To me Myranda, having audio does take some of the mental strain away because I then don't have to do all the reading and I can just sit back and listen as I process things.

When it’s feasible to use audio, there is considerable evidence that presenting words in audio, rather than on-screen text, results in significant learning gains. This is because often times the material is complex or presented at a fast pace. Now from a psychological stand point, the advantage of using audio results from the incoming information being split across two separate cognitive channels—words in the auditory channel and pictures in the visual channel—rather than concentrating both words and pictures in the visual channel. Because of this, there continues to be strong and consistent support for using narration rather than on-screen text to describe graphics.
